Cooking Up Some World History!

50 Authentic, Easy-to-Make Recipes from All Periods of World History!

From the beginning, India was known for exotic spices. People as far away as Rome treasured and desired those spices. While they made India famous, it was rice that sustained the people.

The farmers of ancient India were highly productive. Through the use of plows and most likely zebus (a type of cow) they were able to grow enough food to support the thousands of people living in the cities. The majority of those crops were rice and lentils, along with spices like cinnamon, cardamom, and pepper. Instead of irrigation like their neighbors, they used reservoirs to harvest rainfall, supplying the crops with water during the dry seasons.

Ancient Indians also kept pigs, buffalo, and sheep. As religion changed their culture, many Indians became vegetarians, and this is still true today. While their basic dishes are simply rice and beans, the wonderful spices of India turn such simple foods into an exotic and delicious treat.

Recipes from Ancient India included exotic spices, rice, and lentils.
